El Salvador, Venezuela and Guatemala have the worst gun violence in the world. America’s lax firearm laws are adding to their problems.

Since 1990 the number of gun deaths worldwide has reached 6.5 million. Three quarters of gun deaths occur in just 15 countries.

Latin America is home to some of the world’s most violent countries by murder rate. El Salvador, Venezuela, and Guatemala are the top three countries for deaths caused by guns per population. These Latin American countries are marred by corruption, organized crime, and a dysfunctional criminal justice system that further fuels the problem.

The availability of guns in the United States is another concern for these countries. An estimated 200,000 guns a year, that were first sold in the United States, are smuggled over the southern border and used in violent crimes in Latin America and the Caribbean. In the United States the constitutional right to bear arms has led to looser regulations and easier access to firearms. This contributes to the 30,000 men women and children who were killed with guns each year.

Mass shootings attract their headlines but in fact these make up only 0.2% of gun deaths. 60% of gun related deaths are in fact suicide. America’s suicide rate increased by 25% between 1999 and 2015 – with nearly 45,000 taking their own lives in 2015 alone. Half of these suicides were carried out with guns. Though guns aren’t the most common method of suicide they are the most lethal.

Other wealthy countries have far lower rates of gun violence. In Japan if you want to own a gun you must pass a written exam and a shooting range test, alongside a series of mental health, drug, and criminal record tests – it has virtually eradicated gun crime.

After a mass shooting in 1996, Australia introduced an effective buyback scheme of firearms. In the 20 years following the ban there was an accelerated decline in total gun deaths.

But in America the House of Representatives has not voted on a single measure to prevent gun violence and in some states such as Texas, where students at public colleges can now carry concealed handguns, the law has actually loosened. Easy access to firearms will continue to be the main driver of America’s gun deaths.

  • Back the Blue. To those who claim taking guns away from law abiding citizens is the answer. Faulty reasoning. Post hoc, ergo propter hoc

  • What they leave out is…
    60% are suicides.
35% are gang bangers with illegal guns.
Rest are mostly accidents, like a child getting hands on a gun.

    Nice try, wankers.

  • They are skewing the numbers, of those 30k annual deaths 2/3rds of them are suicide. 700 are accidental discharge, and the majority of the overwhelming majority of the rest are from gang violence. With roughly 350 million guns in the USA, these numbers are miniscule.

  • State violence is also gun violence. 200 million dead in the last century alone. Genocide is always preceded by gun control. Always, every single time, no exceptions.

  • What’s funny is that if you tried to implement the Japanese gun control measures that work into American law, it would be considered racist. The drug test would be considered racist as well as the written test. People in America think the voting hours are racist cause minorities can’t make it to the poles in time. In America, anything and everything is considered racist.

    Liam Handville April 9, 2023 7:04 am
  • The gun laws in constitution of the USA in no way cause gun violence. Criminals who ignore them cause gun violence.

  • Europe's gun violence rate may be cyclical, but boy do the go at it every 20-50 years. More gun deaths in europe in the 20th century than the US will ever have. (Unless creepy joe and prime minister black face lets the chicoms invade)

    Randy Magnum April 9, 2023 7:04 am
  • This is pretty bias. You won't show the other side of your argument you'll say America has a high suicide rate then breezes over Japan's low crime but not bring even higher suicide rate. And yes Australia had a gun buyback program. However only a third of those people required actually brought in guns and they still had mass shootings after the gun buyback

  • Looks like suicide is the key problem in the US. Curb suicide thus reduce gun deaths. Thanks for the info.

  • Only gun violence matters. If you are killed any other way, Democrats don't care. Why don't we work on all violence, which has economics as the most important causative agent?

  • Your mostly wrong.

    .

But correct that Americans have a lot of guns.

Americans own almost half the world’s gun’s and have 20 times more gun’s per-person compared to the rest of the world (The Small Arms Survey stated that U.S. civilians alone account for 393 million (about 46 percent) of the worldwide total of civilian held firearms. This amounts to 120.5 firearms for every 100 residents)

Put that into perspective and compare the US homicide rate to the rest of the world, assuming you are concerned with all crime and not just gun grime.

Global homicide rate 7.6 per 100,000 (Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development)

US homicide rate is 5 per 100,000 (FBI.gov)

The Global rate is 152% higher than the US.

Also, during the last 20 years the US has more than doubled the number of guns and added 19 million concealed carry permits and during this time crime has not gone up but instead it’s gone down 71% Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) data.

Or you could accurately claim we are safer and have more guns and less gun laws.

Defensive Gun Use may explain this.
