Guns weren’t always the contentious issue they are today in the US. Forty years ago, guns were primarily used for sport and recreation, and mass shootings were a rarity. Much has changed since then, and while there’s a lot of debate around how to put an end to gun violence, there has yet to be a solution that everyone can agree on. Gun safety advocate David Farrell thinks he has the answer, and takes us through America’s history to get there.

10 Gun Control | The Complete Moderate's Guide
Whats everybody afraid of? I own guns but don't carry them and have traveled to work in the murder capital of the world for 25 years. The second amendment is already protected and has been supported by the constitution for 232 years without publicization and politicalization. The government isn't going to take your guns because they already have an annually taxpayer funded $842Billion dollar military industrial complex that your guns can't defeat. You can't think like 1776 when the conditions are 2023. Ancestors have had almost 250 years to take back the country but they knew as well as you do that they don't have a chance. What people fail to understand is that the Government and its Royal Army we beat in 1783 is not the world we live in today. Also much of what was gained by the Revolution was lost in 1789 with the constitution giving congress the right to raise a standing Army. Also the very first laws and taxes by the new government started being pushed. 1776 versus 2023 The British Army had around 22,000 men in North America During the Revolution and an additional 25,000 Loyalists. 2023 The U.S. Police Force alone has 800,000 officers with more equipment than what the Continental Army, and Citizen Militias had. The U.S. Military is equipped with a yearly $842B. Budget and over 2,127,713 active duty personnel. Also out of my 12 Ancestors that fought 10 voluntarily joined "County" Militias, the other 2 were in the "Continental" Army. See they were regulated. Where do you think their Revolutionary War pensions and bounty land came from? The Government! People like to read the second amendment has a half truth and leave out the "well regulated militia" part. The modern non-traditional gun owning degenerates, having lost the physical, mental, or moral qualities considered normal and desirable; showing evidence of decline is the number one threat to gun ownership. You are your own worst enemy. When you misuse, abuse, and exploit your own rights is when the Government wants to take them away.
We didn't have mass shootings 40 years ago because everyone had guns. It used to not be so safe to shoot so many people.
MAGA is not the answer
In Switzerland all men are required to learn to use a gun. All men between 18 and 34 are given a pistol, rifle and provided training. US homicide rate 7.9-10.5 per 100,000. Switzerland? 0.7 per 100,000.
Controlling guns may only make gun violence even worse and leave victims unarmed which is a violation of the Constitution.
60 caliber machine gun? You can't be dropping the ball on Ted talks like that lol
Didn’t we used to have legal duels when we got mad at each other
The gun violence archives are a complete lie and they have been shown to edit their data because they have an agenda which is to take away our second amendment they claim that they were only about 1000 people who use guns in self-defense every year when the reality is there are over 3 million people who use guns in self-defense the reality is without us having the right to bear arms that not only would we lose rights away China and other countries do but we would also be a much more dangerous scary country to live in not to mention if you notice they only ever show rifle shootings on television and it always seems to be some Kid under the age of 21 with mental health issues who is always shown to have mental health issues that nobody addressed …If you wanna talk about dangerous objects will cars are extremely dangerous alcohol is even more dangerous so before we start talking about anything with guns let’s ban alcohol and cars and save millions of peoples lives way more lives than guns affect
Forget about history. A simple analysis of today's figures can show how to eliminate 8,000 murders a year.
Simply bring down the Black homicide rate to the rate of the rest of the population.
According to the FBI, Blacks commit 57% of all homicides even though they only comprise 14% of the population. They commit homicide at 7.7 times the rate of the other groups. Again, this is according to the FBI.
So bring that down to the other groups and 8,000 mostly Black lives will be saved.
If you want to use history, all you are doing is dodging the current problem.
The man discredited himself within the first five seconds of his speech.
Your logic is flawed, despite having really good main points. This is not a realistic solution. Why? Because fear is already spread, and there's no way the NRA will lose millions just to bring the country back to a save environment. This is yet another pointless philosophical speech that that is utterly meaningless. There needs to be a gun ban, period. At least 1, almost 2 generations have grown up in a culture of fear. You can't undo that with statements about what guns used to mean to people precisely because it has never meant that to people growing up since 40 years ago. It would be the equivalent of convincing people that old 50s cars are better than agressive sports cars today because they were more spacious and comfortable. We need to evolve, and society today simply points out the inherent flaws already present in the past which never became evident because society was more comfortably living in the status quo. That has changed. The future of the U.S. must include developing a third political party, banning all guns except for specific professional hunters, switching from Fahrenheit to Celsius, and from the Imperial system to the Metric System. These are the changes that the U.S. must take if it truly wants to remain a strong democratic society.
Here’s responsible gun legislation. “…………………….”.
Fixed it.
The speaker obviously did not watch the George Zimmerman trial.
Most non-suicide shootings are gang-related. This is a result of replacing fathers with a welfare check for the past 50 years and opening up the border to MS-13 for the past several years.
School-shootings are almost exclusively done by young incells that are on prescription meds. The media and schools have feminized young men to the point that only the top 20% are able to have sex with women.
The solution?
1)Stop prescribing psychotic medication to our young men.
2) Stop paying women to have fatherless children
3) Wait 40-80 years for the next generations of boys to have fathers that can teach them to become men.
You want to talk about fear how about we arm everyone and put FEAR IN THE CRIMINAL SO HE KNOWS IF HE STARTS WEIGHING 260 LBS AND EVERYBODY REPLYS , HE'LL LEAVE 4 or5 lbs heavier on a gurney. They're only tough in gun free zones
60 percent of gun deaths are suicide. I don't see how his proposal addresses this. Also his NRA centric viewpoint does nothing to address the average street thug who commits violent crimes. Changing the NRA wont address the gun culture issue in inner cities. You need to address music and media that glorifies gun violence there as well.
Interesting the number of spam negative comments. I think this guy hit the nail on the head. The NRA sold fear and wasn’t stopped.
A person yells fire in a crowded room and they prosecute them. The NRA yells you need to protect yourself from the evil doers (whoever they may be) and they get richer.
2A isn’t about Hunting. This whole talk is flawed. Need to go back farther than 40yrs – he’s missing so much
It would be a massive upheaval to change societal stability i.e. mental health, well being, happiness etc, to fit in with gun control. Wouldn't it be easier the other way around.
GO FUCK YOUR MEGA DICK HEAD INSURRECTIONIST!
This man really said in the first 200 years of this country mass shootings were not the “norm”
As far as stand your ground laws, the intent is not so that you can follow them and start an altercation and kill somebody. Stand your ground is so you can defend yourself from an attack, in the George Zimmerman situation I feel stand your ground was interpreted incorrectly.
What also happened in the 1970s was a move to ban handguns, which is probably why the NRA shifted. There is a huge difference between regulating and banning a product. The gun debate changed from regulation to banning a certain gun with the goal to eventually ban all guns. Gun ownership for self defense was just not questioned prior to the 1970s. As far as the leap to take a human life for self defense, that is just a natural human instinct, no one wants to do that, it is just if I have a choice of kill or be killed I chose kill, and I didn’t make that decision the attacker did.
I've watched this 3 times and still can't fathom how wrong the speaker is on so many things. It almost rises to satire.
What a fucking LIAR!
This guy is the fearful one. In 2022 , huge increase in crime b3cause the leadership of cities is failing.
He’s got balls accusing law abiding citizens for causing mass shootings. How about going after all the gang bangers that make up a majority of mass shootings
The United States wouldn't exist if people didn't use guns to defeat the British military, since they were in control and were trying to disarm all citizens. That's why the 2nd Amendment was written.
u ask for Shi** that's what u get. Don't start it. They won't be' "it". Fear did keep people some-what in check so morality was loosely practiced. Now offending somebody is the d*m sporting event. U don't have a right to put ur crap in someone's face "in public" displays. Or keep fundamental rights & necceseties from the few. That includes sex' companionship, "A mate" as well a home some space'. Cean water and food warmth. Decent "modest" clothing..
The media and people like you are stoking the flames of violence in our society George Zimmerman has been shot at attacked and persecuted endlessly because of people and entities that place society at a hole above the individuals of this nation one life is unimportant to your ideals thus meaning if majority decides my life should end your fine with majority ending my life this is why in the American constitution the individual is who has the power and most importantly the reason for the massive spikes in crime in the last century is the lack of morals we carry as a hole
Stop twisting these laws stand your ground is only applicable on your property that guy followed a man who he saw leaving his barn in the middle of the night when he caught up to him he called him out for trespassing then was attacked by the invader it was proven justified and no place in this country would’ve convicted a man of murder for confronting a trespasser armed and defending yourself when attacked
Yes I buy guns to kill people my life and the lives of my children is worth more to me than the life of some drug addled lunatic or politician who decides to come into my home to harm them my childrens future is my entire life if you intend to take that away from me I intend to take your future away from you
Actually thought he was going in the right direction until he started blaming the NRA and it all went downhill from there.
Torro caga. What is a 60 caliber machine gun? Martin bashed Zimmerman's head into the concrete: Zimmerman then shot Martin. Can't help but believe Martin could have avoided the whole deal by just going home. We raise violent little bastards that fear not. Not the police, the courts, the prisons or God. They are feral predators, and there is only method that controls feral predators. Feral predators are not Human.
How idiotic does a populace have to be to keep guns to be safe. Stay away from such stupid country.
Treat guns like we treat alcohol. The retailers being held more responsible to whom the sell weapons to. People need to push individual retailers to utilize the right to refuse service more often. Similar to how a bartender cuts off an inebriated patron at the bar. Of course this is not an end all solution, though it should be brought onto attention that vendors should be more aware of whom they do transactions with. This way, the second amendment is protected and no govt needs to be involved, and on top of that i believe it's a real solution to gun violence. You can. And no matter what you believe, less people who own guns shooting innocent people, well that number can always be lower.
As soon as he said that during the first 200 years of our history the primary reason people owned guns was for hunting a sport I knew this talk was going to be off target. The Militia Act of 1792 dedicated that every able bodied man from 18 – 45 had to own a firearm. The primary reasons were to protect against foreign invasion, protect against a totalitarical central government, protect against attackes by criminals, animals and hostile Indian tribes. This didn't limit ownership to just the militia (it's the right of The People to keep and bear arms) but the idea that hunting and sport were the primary reasons is nonsense. Today some of these threats are not as prevalent but as far as the exercise of our 2nd Amendment rights are concerned that is immaterial. The problem that needs to be addressed isn't a gun problem but a mental health problem. High school kids use to bring guns to school while participating in shooting clubs. Why weren't these kids shooting up schools in the 1950's?
Self defense was always a reason
Small pocket guns where always made
This might want to check his facts
On a lot of stuff
Anti socialist and racism is the number one cause for mass shooting
The spike in mass shootings also rose with the use and sale of the iPhone so stop buying iPhone then I wouldn’t be able to see or respond to this video
Service in the armed forces, does not a firearms expert make.
LAAAAAAMMMMMEEEEEEE
Great talk ….well said !
4:48 I legally purchase firearms to kill people? Yeah, I bought a fire extinguisher to have my house burn too.
I was writing as this guy was talking and had to quit. From 60 caliber machine guns to Zimmerman being acquitted because of Stand Your Ground. I stopped counting the false or incorrect statements at 20 before 8 minutes. Fear is bad. Dr Maslow's basic needs … Food, Water, Air, Shelter, Security. Any rational person assesses the risk of losing any of those because their loss equals physical death. Remember the old story. State Trooper pulls over 80 year old lady for a traffic violation. Trooper asks the lady if she has a firearm in the vehicle. She pulls out more than one and hands them over. The Trooper asks the 80 year old lady, Ma'am what in the world are you so afraid of? Her response is … not a darn thing young man, can I please have my guns back. Where we live police response averages just over 20 minutes and is more likely the next shift change. If you want to live that way, that is your right. If folks choose not to live that way, that is their choice. Studies asking convicts what they fear the most the most prominent answer higher than getting caught by police is an armed victim. The prepared are never fearful except from a predator so large they cannot defend themselves. Consider who or what is the largest predator in America today. Shame on TED for hosting this liar.
Everyone should own two guns. One gun to protect yourself from your own government. and the second gun to protect yourself from other governments.
First off, I have no use for Zimmerman, he is a scumbag in my view. But "Come on man!" He did not go out and follow Travon. He was the neighborhood watchman and he followed what he thought was a suspicious person. Yes, he had a gun. yes, I believe his 'suspicion' was based in racism. But the only "fear" he shot Travon out of, was fear that he was going to die, because Travon was integrating his head into the sidewalk. I find that fairly reasonable all things considered. I have a masters in psychology and therefore, I agree with the base premise here, but the execution is employing the same fear BS you decry.
Back in the days you mention for the basis of your comments, let us not forget, if you raped a woman, her bothers, uncles and so forth would get together and "discuss it" with you and thus 'discourage' you from a repeat episode. The thing to do, and I say this as a person who does not own a gun, is to start actually addressing the individuals who perpetrate the violence. Every time soft on crime is demonstrated, the criminal gets more bold. Fact of human nature. There is a lot more going on here than your simple, based in fear mongering, explanation takes into account.
A gun has never murdered anyone, it is ALWAYS the scumbag who is pulling the trigger.
Thanks for playing.
