DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – In wake of the fatal Perry High School shooting earlier this month, lawmakers, educators, and students came together at a community forum in Davenport Saturday to talk about common sense gun control.
Those in attendance shared personal experiences involving gun violence, as well as ideas for potential legislation.
“It really is the time to have a conversation about how we prevent, and spend the time to come up with a prevention, and then really tighten up some of the loose gun laws we have in Iowa,” said Iowa State Sen. Cindy Winckler.
Winckler says she hopes these conversations can continue going forward.
“I just think that we need to do a better job with our proposals,” she said. “So that the public is aware that there are alternatives in legislative proposals and and promote promote our ideas as well.”
After the shooting at Perry High School, Gov. Kim Reynolds also said she will be working on ways to prevent more tragedies.
“It’s impossible to understand why anything like this happens,” she said. “I want you to know we will work tirelessly to get the answers so that we can prevent this from happening again.”
Winckler added that she believes the two parties can find common ground on this issue, if they can keep the focus on preventing future shootings rather than making responsible gun owners feel they will lose their firearms.
