I have been thinking about machine gun optics for a while, as I am on the waiting list for a Lage Max 11/15A1 5.56mm upper for my M11A1 (registered and legal) machine pistol. I am fitting the Lage upper with a BlkLbl bipod/handguard, and that leaves the question of what sighting system to put on it. Red dots allow one to maintain a sight picture while firing, but offer no ability to identify targets beyond range of the naked eye. Magnified optics allow much better visibility, but are difficult to use effectively beyond the first shot in a burst. Even a variable at 1x has an eye box and relatively fine reticle.
The solution I have found that I think will be the best compromise is the Spuhr BAM (Ballistic Adjustable Mount). This is a mounting platform that holds an Aimpoint CompM4 red dot and an Aimpoint 3x magnifier and has a BDC allowing both dot and magnifier to be adjusted to hit at 250, 400, 500, or 600m. The Aimpoint has no holdovers in its reticle (which is just a plain dot), so this adjustment allows the dot to be used effectively out to the maximum effective range of the 5.56mm cartridge. The magnifier is fitted via a flip-over/twist-off mount, so it can be flipped out of the way when not in use (ie, after a target is identified), or detached completely when not wanted.
I am really eager to get this mounted on the Lage Max 11/15A1 and actually try it out on the range! This rig is not exactly cheap, and I am grateful to Spuhr for providing me with the BAM mount, and to Optics Planet for providing the Aimpoint and magnifier. Everything Spuhr makes is of excellent quality, and I highly recommend him for all sorts of scope mounts, if you can afford his work.

Why not eotech magnifier combo?
When the only rail for a scope is on the top cover that flips open its very hard to get a point of aim to be in the grouping of the gun when there's no way to have a constant POA because that cover just rattles and moves around. The Negev is the best example to have a good rail for a scope. see Ian's video on the Negev and he points out that rail and how it works better. The scope is really mostly good for seeing targets and trying to spot for yourself and adjust fire to the target.
Next time try to show us the reticle. It would be more interesting
Very interesting but I don't see what this can do that a quick-release+flip-to-side magnifier and red dot with an acss reticle cannot do.
Are there any optics for Bren LMG??
Never skimp on optics that set-up brings a $300 rifle to $5000 to $8500 rifle performance and can be used on smg, pcc, pdw, dmr, saw, gpmg, hmg, glmg and ECT. IMO
Really wish you talked about how to mount the Aimpoint to the Spuhr mount. That would have been very interesting
I believe it is time to challenge doctrine on use of the L MG, not an “area” or “burst” weapon. My perspective is from that of light infantry and special forces and tend to the view that all troops be armed with LMG
2.800$????
I see alot mg use the canadian elcan
You could always mount that thing to your Chauchat.
I have the eotech HHS setup and love it. SOCOM has been using them for years.
Elcan mgo worked great on the saw and 240 when i was deployed
You are well planned with your set up, that’s for sure! Thanks for the video, Ian!
A red dot with the acss is much cheaper and simpler.
Cheaper than an elcan
Was neat seeing you on the Primary & Secondary "modcast" when this setup was recommended!
Have you seen the GRD/ DI Optics machine gun optics? DCL 110AD 3x?

I really like red dots for paintball. Quick target acquisition
I found that my hits on target were better with little to no magnification. If I honestly needed to identify out to +300 meters I had binos on my person.
I'd ended up loving iron sights the most in machinegun use. A low-profile red-dot would have been nice but we only had fixed magnification ELCANs for the machinegun user.
Look forward to hearing how you end up liking its usage.
MG sights…… screams in MG3
Would something like an elcan spectre be an option?
I've been trying to find the answer to this for a while(I suppose I should just call aimpoint.) I shoot long guns left handed, and have always wanted to add a 3x magnifier to one of my guns with an aimpoint, but feel like the magnifier when folded to the right would block my vision.
Does anyone know if these magnifiers can flip to the other side for lefties?
